Leiru was formed at the end of 2004 as a one-man project. The artist recorded two demos in 2005 with his home equipment, the purpose of which was to capture all those musical ideas he had had so far, without any specific aim or agenda. But as there was positive feedback, he went on writing songs, now with a clearer direction and concept in mind, and the help of a co-author (ws). The cooperation resulted in Demo No. 3. This unfriendly, exceedingly noisy stuff, which was released by Subterra Records, was the first material to reach a wider audience. The fourth demo, which came out in 2009, didn’t actually bring a complete turn away from the toughness and rawness of the previous recordings, but it emphasized a lower key and a friendlier sound at the expense of extreme noise. Nevertheless, noise still remains an important part and expressive element of Leiru’s music. Although the quality of Demo No. 4 is already better than that of the previous materials, it was still recorded with a drum machine and home equipment. In spite of this, it can be regarded as the first full-length album of the project because of its length and complexity. In fact, a rerecording of the whole album is possible in the future. The songs that can be heard on Demo 4 were all written by Leiru’s founding member. March 2010 saw the arrival of Sadaist, with whom Leiru’s burning need for a real-life drummer could finally be satisfied. After a series of successful rehearsals, the band started to record new material with Sadaist, the title of which is going to be Ex Nihilo... The new line-up and the urge to progress may motivate the band to record more traditional and comprehensible songs. Of course it’s not going to mean a complete change of direction, so the new stuff will still feature the usual harmonies, twisted tunes and an underground (say: amateur) attitude.
