Trent'anni.

Trent'anni fa io giocavo col lego, dopo essermi tolto il grembiule blu col fiocco bianco (dio, quanto lo odiavo quel maledettissimo fiocco) appena tornato dalla terza elementare. E voi? Cosa facevate voi, trent'anni fa? Magari qualcuno di voi non era neanche nato, magari giocavate col lego pure voi, magari anche voi cominciavate a sperimentare sulla vostra pelle i primi assaggi di quella piaga sociale chiamata omologazione, che tanti segni ha lasciato nella nostra generazione.

Trent'anni fa, invece, un giovanotto di nome Peavy Wagner e i suoi Avenger pubblicavano il loro primo album, "Prayers of Steel". E suonavano del fottuto metal. *

Potrei chiudere qui codesta recensione: "The Soundchaser Archives" infatti non è altro che la celebrazione di trenta anni di carriera di un uomo, Peavy, e la sua band, i Rage. Una band che ha attraversato decadi, cambi di formazione, alti e bassi, ma che è sempre rimasta una costante nel panorama metalloso teutonico. Una costante, sì, ma mai una ballerina di prima fila: sempre relegata in zona Uefa, al massimo nella Champions, i Rage non hanno mai vinto uno scudetto che sia uno. Eppure, a Peavy e soci, non sono mai mancate le belle canzoni, un sound riconoscibilissimo, una fedeltà alla causa del metallo che fa commuovere, pur con i suoi scivoloni sinfonici, o troppo moderni, o troppo poco TRVE, salcazzo. Comunque sia andata, di gruppi in questi trent'anni ne sono nati e morti così tanti che ci si potrebbe scrivere un'enciclopedia, ed invece i Rage sono ancora lì, sempre lì, lì nel mezzo, incuranti di mode e trend.

La Nuclear Blast, perciò, ha preparato questa bella 'torta' di compleanno per i Rage: un doppio cd, contenente 30 pezzi, uno per anno; in questo lussuoso 2cd-set trovate chicche su chicche: demo di brani ormai famosi, b-sides, abbozzi registrati in studio, riarrangiamenti, un paio di inediti e chi più ne ha più ne metta. In calce alla rece, per completezza, vi copio incollo le parole dello stesso Peavy, che ci fa un veloce track-by-track, così non vi perdete niente.

Ma qui, non me ne vogliano certi nostri affezionati lettori, non si fa la recensione all'album (che, di per sé, è più un cimelio da collezionisti, seppur pieno di gustose perle); qui, amici miei, si vuole rendere il giusto tributo ad un pezzo della nostra storia di metallari, una band, un uomo che per chi vi scrive è l'incarnazione stessa della musica di cui mi sono innamorato perdutamente, ormai tanti anni fa. Grazie, Peavy. Grazie, Rage. Ogni metallaro degno di questo nome dovrebbe portarvi tatuati sul petto.
